It’s that troubling time for kids again!
Well most kids have been on vacation from everything normal for two or more weeks now and that does not even take into account Thanksgiving! As a parent I can say it is hard to get back on track. All out habits and traditions have been broken and all the things I need my son to do he now says he does not want to do. What is going on with the struggles our kids are going through?
SO…… What do I do…….
Sometimes we get frustrated and give in, I have found myself doing this at times, “fine, I am not going to fight with you”. Truth is that children are creatures of habit, things that are no longer habit are moved on the priority list in their minds, even the good things they need to develop character and further education.
We as parents now have to do something hard, we have to make kids do things they need to do and rebuild old habits and traditions. As a martial art instructor I have dealt with this issue with other peoples children long before I had one of my own! Now is a time to teach the kids that they need to follow through, they need to not give up and they need to always work to become better. So as a parent we will have a little short time pain but that pain will result in long term gain for our children and the next generation.
One way I help to speed up this process is when I make my son participate in something I always talk to him about how much fun he had right after, as I want him to focus on the reasons he should want to do something instead of focusing on what I made him do. Look for points of praise and make sure to bring them up with your child. I personally like to point out their reluctance after taking about how awesome they were and how much fun they had.
If we as parent’s play our cards right the children will be back on track about the time all the adults are skipping out on their gym membership duties! 🙂 Seriously though, do not let your kids distraction from the holidays stop them from doing what will benefit them in the long term.
Happy New Year everyone and good luck with the kids and the resolutions!
